After installing the Realtek new HD sound drivers you might have situation where the mic volume is set to its lowest setting or the mic is not enabled. With the mic volume this low/quite or not enabled, most applications can not hear any sound coming from the mic input.
A. To resolve this problem you will want to go into the Realtek sound driver control panel by clicking on the tray icon next to the time on your system tray. (You may have to click the little left arrow to open the list of system programs to see the Realtek control panel icon)

B. Click on the "Audio IO" Tab and verify that the mic input is working on either the Back Panel or Front Panel.

Mine is plugged into the Back Panel so you will notice the jack is glowing pink between the device and the jack.(you would have also seen a warning message that your mic input was working when you first plugged in your mic.) If the mic jack is not glowing pink then you either have a problem with the mic itself, or its plugged into the wrong jack, or there is a problem with the input itself.

1. Click on the "Mixer" Tab.

2. Under the Realtek HD Output Menu use the arrows to scroll to the right until you see Mic Volume.

3. Click on the little dot icon to bring up the "Advanced Menu" and check "Microphone Boost". Click OK.

4. Move the "Mic Volume" slider till it is near the top.

5. Make sure the mic is not muted under "Realtek HD Primary Input" in the bottom control section. (Additionally, unless you are going to be recording audio from other programs, I would suggest you mute "Stereo Mix" if it is not already muted.)

That should do it. If you still are having trouble give Scott Larson Consulting a call at 707-542-8590 or email me at slarson@scottlarsonconsulting.com I can either help walk you though it over the phone, or I can start a remote VNC Session and repair the problem.
