Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

This guide is for users of digital audio players that are not in the Apple category. If you have an Apple digital audio player use Apple's guide on how to transfer music to your player.

This guide can help you transfer music to a digital audio player that uses a removable memory card. What you will need:

  • A digital audio player. See my recommendations guide on digital audio players if you are looking for a professional experience at a price you can afford.
  • A MicroSD card. See this guide If you are looking for information on how to choose an SD or Micro SD card
  • A PC with a USB or a Multifunction Memory Card Reader.
  • A MicroSD to SD Adapter if you don't have Multifunction Memory Card Reader that came with your PC.
  • About 20-30 minutes of time to go though the guide.

Most MicroSD cards come with a MicroSD to SD Adapter to be used in a Multifunction Memory Card Reader that comes with most PC's. If the MicroSD card didn't come with an adapter you will need to purchase either a MicroSD to SD or a MicroSD to USB adapter. Insert the MicroSD card into the SD Adapter as shown above.

2. Preparing the MicroSD USB Adapter for USB Functionality

1. After inserting the memory reader into the appropriate port, you should see a message from your computer that a device was inserted. I will ask you what to do with it, click open. You should see an explorer window with a driver letter highlighted on the left and an empty panel on the right. This indicates that memory device is inserted but empty. Note the drive letter, you will need to use it later.

2. If you are not comfortable with transferring music yourself from your computer to a memory card then you can use a software to help you. There are a few options out on the Internet. I chose Foobar2000 for this guide because its free and open source. If you want to make the transferring process easier then Foobar2000 will help.

Complete Music Folder Transfer Verifying Music Folder Transfered to MicroSD Card

1. Select an appearance that you are comfortable with, if you don't know which appearance to choose just use the defaults, you can go back to that later.

7. This feature makes it easy to organize your music in a way you can read if you ever have to go and look at the contents of the music later. In the sub-folder selection I usually select artist / album. This pattern creates a folder by the name of the music artist, and then sub folder for the music album. In the File Name section I select NN.artist - title so it names the file by the "track number" "." "Music Artist" - "Music Track Title".
